Recently we were contact by a business owner in Lansing who was working on a commercial remodeling project. She was completely remodeling her store in Lansing and had purchased new poplar doors and trim for her remodeling project. The problem that she had was that her painter wasn’t able to stain her new poplar trim and doors to the color that she was wanting.

If you have every done any staining of poplar wood then you will know that although it is very affordable to purchase it most of the times comes with varying shades green, black, and white wood grain all on one piece of trim. This makes it very difficult to get a consistent color without the green and black wood grain bleeding through. Getting a consistent uniform color with wood trim like poplar is not difficult, but you have to know what products and steps to take in order to mute out the undesired wood colors.

For this remodeling project we developed a 3 step process that allowed us to mute out the undesirable colors, and then stain the trim to the desired Cherry color that the store owner was looking for. We then applied several coats of a high quality lacquer to give all of the trim a high quality furniture finish.

Chicago Basement Remodeling

DuBois Builders specializes in Chicago basement remodeling projects, but also services many other Chicago area communities including Aurora, Downers Grove, Flossmoor, Joliet, Lombard, Naperville, Orland Park, Plainfield, Shorewood, Tinley Park, and many other fine Central Illinois and Chicago area communities.

This custom staircase in St. Charles IL is a project that we recently worked on. DuBois Builders was contracted to apply the custom finish on this beautiful custom staircase that started down on the basement level and curved its way up to a third floor landing that we also sanded down and applied a custom finish.

This staircase was hand sanded with extra attention paid to the top of the treads so that the wear pattern on them would give the appearance of an old staircase that had years of people walking up and down it. The custom mixed stain that was used was also hand rubbed in these areas to make the treads look worn as well. If you look close in some of the pictures you can see the wear pattern going down the staircase.

Custom Sinks

Sinks are one of those things in a house that most people and most custom home builders think have to be ordered out of a catalog. This could not be farther from the truth. Over the years we have had custom made sinks built for many of our clients. Some of these hand made sinks were used in powder rooms, but the vast majority of them were installed in custom kitchens where they are used every day.

Butchers Block Island Counter Tops

Butchers block island counter tops are another special feature that we have had custom built for many of our clients. The finish on these counter tops depends on what the client is planning on using the counter for. For instance those clients that are planning on actually using the counter top for chopping up meat and vegetables then we will leave counter top natural and only apply a few coats of mineral oil to the wood. Otherwise the counter tops can be stained and a durable furniture finish applied.
